Ramadan is just around the corner and it's time for the pro-Ramadan chefs to showcase their skills by adorning their iftar tables with a variety of delectable and wholesome iftar delicacies. I'm more excited than ever to share a range of typical iftar delicacies with my audiences that I usually make every Ramadan. The commonly devoured iftar delicacy that you can find on literally every Arab iftar table are these warm and sweet, cheese-filled honeycomb buns.
Apparently, these sweet and cheesy honeycomb buns are so easy and quick to make that you can prepare them every other day and make them a part of your daily iftar routine. Another reason why you should bake these delicious buns is because these are every kid's favorite. Follow the recipe below and see how the kids would grab these lil buns and pop them into their mouths, the minute you bring them from the kitchen to the table.Ingredients
For the dough:
All purpose flour- 2 and 1/2 cups
Yeast- 1 sachet/ 2 tsp
Sugar- 3 and 1/2 tbsp
Salt- 1/4th tsp
Baking Powder- 1/4th tsp
Melted Butter- 4tbsp
Warm Milk- 1 cup
egg- 1 (for egg wash)
For the filling:
Triangle cream cheese (cut into portions)
For the glaze/syrup:
(for sugar syrup)
Sugar- 1 cup
Water-1/2 cup
Honey- 1 tbsp
OR
Sweetened condensed milk
1. In a large mixing bowl, sift all purpose flour then add yeast, sugar, salt, baking powder, melted butter and mix.
2. Gradually pour warm milk to the dough (as required) and start needing it into a soft smooth dough. Cover it with a wet cloth or a cling wrap and set it aside for an hour or two until you see the dough has raised twice its size.
3. Remove the wrap/cloth and knead the dough very well. Cut the dough into small portions and fill each with a portion of cheese then roll it into smooth balls.
4. Grease the bottom of a baking tray or casserole, and arrange these in the shape of a honeycomb leaving 1 inch gap between each bun.
5. Whisk an egg separately and brush the top of the buns. Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake at 180℃ for 25 mins or until you see the top slightly golden brown.
6. For the sugar syrup, combine sugar, water and honey in a saucepan. Heat it until you see the syrup thickened.
7. Pull the tray out of the oven once done and glaze the buns with prepared sugar syrup or simply pour condensed milk on top and Enjoy!
